Critical Minerals: Recycling vs. Dissipative Losses – the Case of Indium

چکیده

Critical materials share the same insufficiencies in their life cycles; low recycling rates and a high degree of dissipative losses. The limitations for the secondary use of critical materials are their minor concentrations in final products, their dissipative applications, and the fact that they are irreversibly mixed with other material flows in current recycling practices. This is exacerbated with ineffective collection, losses in pre-treatment, recycling and disposal. There is also need to challenge the view that materials in the anthroposphere are intrinsically recoverable. The paper argues that the reduction of dissipation of critical materials should have much higher priority. This calls for more efficient recycling strategies for both waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and thin-film photovoltaics, and also for revising the priorities in recycling strategies. In addition, sustainable energy strategies should consider the limitations of critical materials, such as indium, and should be drafted in concert with sustainable waste management strategies.

Thermoeconomic analysis of reducing exergy losses in greenhouses with hydroponic cultivation system through drainage recycling and formation of water quality pyramid

Employing non-conventional water resources using treatment and recycling is considered as the main resource in addressing future water scarcity. Although non-conventional water recycling has been investigated in details in the literature, its impacts on irrigation-fertilizing systems have not been discussed using thermoeconomic analysis.  In this case study, using a hydroponic greenhouse system...

Dissipative Divertor Operation in the Alcator C-mod Tokamak Dissipative Divertor Operation in the Alcator C-mod Tokamak

The achievement of large volumetric power losses (dissipation) in the Alcator C-Mod divertor region is demonstrated in two operational modes: radiative divertor and detached divertor. During radiative divertor operation, the fraction of SOL power lost by radiation is P R/PSOL0.8 with single null plasmas, n e < 2x10 20 m-3 and I < 1 MA. These plasmas sometimes have very high recycling, with nedi...

Exposure to hardly soluble indium compounds in ITO production and recycling plants is a new risk for interstitial lung damage.

OBJECTIVES To identify the effects of indium on the lung and to assess exposure-effect and exposure-response relations between indium exposure and effects on the lungs. METHODS Ninety three male indium exposed and 93 male non-exposed workers from four ITO manufacturing or ITO recycling plants were analysed in a cross-sectional study. Indium in serum (In-S) was determined as a biological expos...

Continuous Feedings of Fortified Human Milk Lead to Nutrient Losses of Fat, Calcium and Phosphorous

Substantial losses of nutrients may occur during tube (gavage) feeding of fortified human milk. Our objective was to compare the losses of key macronutrients and minerals based on method of fortification and gavage feeding method. We used clinically available gavage feeding systems and measured pre- and post-feeding (end-point) nutrient content of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (Phos), protein, and f...

Recyclability Challenges in “abundant” Material-based Technologies

Much current research in photovoltaic technology is directed towards using “abundant” base metals like copper and zinc (e.g., CZTS or more recently CZTSSe) to overcome the the challenges of material scarcity posed by the use of tellurium, indium, germanium, and gallium in current generation products (e.g., CdTe, CIGS, aSi/thin-film Si). The supply of these materials is limited because they are ...
